Brewing in support of the Domestic Violence Intervention Program
March 2, 2020
Big Grove Brewery is proud to debut a new beer, Equalitea Party, brewed in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), the centennial celebration of women’s suffrage, and Domestic Violence Intervention Program’s 40th Anniversary.
Crafted in partnership with the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP), Equalitea Party is a Berliner Weisse style kettle sour beer brewed with honey, white tea, and lemon peel to create a refreshing flavor and gentle, sour finish. To produce the beer, Big Grove staff members and DVIP representatives shared in a collaborative brew day in Big Grove’s Solon brewery on January 29.
Big Grove Brewery’s Lead Designer & Marketing Coordinator, Katie Kiesewetter led the project and expressed, “Sharing our space with Ashlee and Alta from DVIP was a meaningful and educational experience for all parties involved. Lincoln, our lead brewer in Solon, taught us all a new skill in the brewhouse, and we were all able to discuss the work we do at Big Grove while learning about DVIP’s mission in a more intimate setting.”
For each glass of Equalitea Party sold in Big Grove’s Iowa City Taproom and Solon Brewpub, $1 will be donated to DVIP. Additionally, each retail sale of a four-pack of the beer will also generate a $1 donation supporting DVIP efforts to provide comprehensive support and advocacy services to domestic violence victims/survivors across Johnson, Iowa, Cedar, Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Van Buren, and Washington Counties.
Alta Madea-Peters, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program’s Director of Community Engagement, shared, “Community partnerships are vital to our organization. The number one way that victims and survivors find out about our services is through word-of-mouth. A partnership with Big Grove does amazing things. The massive appeal that Big Grove has to our communities that we serve is huge because that means even more people are hearing about DVIP and changing lives for their neighbors.”
This brew will be available for the first time beginning Friday, March 6 in the Big Grove Iowa City Taproom and Big Grove Solon Brewpub.
Katie Kiesewetter added, “In solidarity with International Women’s Day, I wanted to brew a beer with proceeds benefiting an organization doing the most good for women in our community. Iowa City has so many great programs doing important work, but the Domestic Violence Intervention Program’s mission, specifically, is near and dear to me because they help the most vulnerable populations of people who are looking to get back on track after surviving domestic or intimate partner violence. We hope that this beer release will be incredibly successful, but because the need is so great, any dollar amount we can raise will be impactful.
Big Grove is also hosting a pair of benefits events in support of DVIP. Friday, March 6, Big Grove Brewery & Taproom in Iowa City will host a fundraiser concert featuring a four-act music lineup (info HERE). Sunday, March 8, Big Grove’s Solon Brewpub will be hosting a question-and-answer happy hour and fundraiser (info HERE).
“We’re actively strengthening our communal bond with the charitable partners we select because we’re enthusiastic about what they do, and we want to be a part of it,” Katie added. “Personally, having been actively involved in the feminist-activist community, it was a neat experience to work on a project for Big Grove that overlapped with a cause I care so much about. Being able to share this kind of activism with my team at Big Grove and our customers fills me with a lot of pride and gratitude.”
